Björn Jonson
Professor Emeritus Clinical Physiology Lund University

The ServoVentilator Saga – Could it come true today?

Björn Jonson, today 80 years old, will take us back to 1967 when the first flow-controlled ventilator was conceived in and further developed until it was marketed as Servo Ventilator 900 in 1971. The story describes how it was possible for a young student to meet success along a long pathway from conception, patenting, construction and testing without any initial economical support but together with a group of great characters. After 4 years of industrial development, a small, silent, easy to handle, apparatus that not only ventilated the patient partly in response to his own respiratory efforts, but also monitored the process on the basis of electronic pressure and flow transducers created a revolution in the field of the very new discipline Intensive care.

The question will be discussed: Could a similar story come true in today’s academic and industrial environments? That might mitigate some Covid-19 problems.

Björn Jonson

Björn Jonson was born on April 12, 1940 in Malmö where he graduated 1959. The same year Björn started his studies in medicine in Lund. The following year Björn lost his parents. In 1961 Björn joined Georg Kahlson at the Department of Physiology. He switched to clinical physiology in 1962 when the discipline was introduced at the University Hospital under Håkan Westling. Håkan gave Björn the task to develop lung physiological diagnostics and sent Björn in 1963 to the United States where he developed new techniques for this. Håkan also introduced Björn to Associate Professor Sven Ingelstedt at the ENT department where he continued his studies of airway physiology, from the middle ear to the lung. Sven had the idea that ventilators should be flow controlled. For that purpose Björn developed a gas flow regulator and constructed and patented the first flow-controlled ventilator in 1967. After further development together with Siemens, the ServoVentilator was marketed in 1971.

Björn Jonson succeeded Håkan Westling as professor in clinical physiology 1980. Focus in Björns still continuing research is on clinical respiratory physiology particularly mechanical ventilation and intensive care.
